tywhite ♥s it

oh hi! i'm ty white. i love technology and music, and lots of other things, including you! this is the place for random cool findings. i also blog seriously about music & technology and less seriously about music. Say hi!
As a number of kids posing to be demographically appropriate celebrities (members of Odd Future, Joanna Newsom) battled for the right to DJ, the event dwindled into nothingness. But it did raise a few questions about the future of music: Is the online music festival ever going to be a viable event? Can turntable.fm figure out a way to prevent kids with musical ADD from giving everyone in the audience a migraine as the music constantly changes? And most importantly: Will trolls ever get tired of trolling?

Turntable.fm Goes From Zero To Woodstock ‘99 At #VIPFest

Yesterday was the site’s ‘coming of hype age’ as earlier in the day than #VIPFest, GvB started a room that basically the entire music blog community descended upon.  It was fun for a while, but then got way too crowded and devolved rapidly.  Real jerks with quick trigger fingers stepped into the DJ booth and got ‘nexted’ time and again.

I think Turntable.fm and sites like it (outloud.fm a compelling alternative) are tons of fun and have a lot of potential, but for now I’m going to stick with using these services with small groups in unpublicized rooms.  When the crowds show up, the scene just gets too stupid.

Once again, the web’s “social” potential is restricted by real-life, natural restraints — in the long run, personal preference trumps social novelty.

To its credit, though, Turntable (or the idea behind it) has potential as a radio-like app. The question will become if those who self-select as the tastemakers will be willing to share the spotlight so evenly.
